Istallation help?

Having trouble installing? Make sure you read the instructions fully.

  • Classic template installing help: click here - please note that this is how to install CLASSIC templates (classic templates come as a .txt file and you have to copy and paste the data into your "dashboard" area).
  • XML (widget friendly) template installing help: click here - if installing an XML (or "new" template) please click there. Most of my newest templates are an .xml file (that has to be "uploaded") while the old ones are "classic"/html templates. Not sure which kind of template it is? Check the instructions on the post from which you downloaded the template!

General questions

"Will you design a custom blog for me?"
At this stage I have no time to do custom work but you can buy cheap, one-off blogger templates at www.acornglue.com. Hooray.

"I take great offense at your URL and you should be ashamed of yourself! Are you?"
No. Not at all. There's more to life than getting your knickers in a knot over a simple double entendre. I think it's cute and funny.

"I use a Mac and I'm having trouble with your "classic" or "old" Blogger templates!"
Mac's word pad thing is weird so if you try and open a "classic" template it will load the images within the word-pad application and you won't be able to copy & paste properly. I have a Mac too (so we're both cool) but to get just the plain text drag and drop the .txt file into Safari or Firefox and it will load just the text. Copy and paste this into the "template" section of your dashboard and viola!

"I don't know anything about the internet. What computer settings should I have ?"
I don't (like or) use Internet Explorer anymore, I use Firefox. A person shouldn't automatically assume that the internet browser that came with their computer is the best one for them. I like Firefox and I've been using it (and claiming it's worth) for many years. I also have a Mac, but there's nothing wrong with a PC.

Whatever browser you chose to use, you should always make sure that you have the most recent version - this will ensure your security and you'll be able to see websites the way they were meant to be seen. Older browsers often don't show websites properly.

"What about you? Who are you?"
I use: Photoshop CS (to edit images), Dreamweaver (to make websites), a macbook and Firefox. I like kittens, candy, retro anything and books about space. I also like toast, boys and photos of cakes.

This is a simple yet cute blogger design with a dark background and a pinky/greeny/purpley highlights. Oh and a cute little TV man - he loves love (and you'll love him too).

This is identical to the Blue Cookie Cutter but it's terracotta in hue. So if you don't like blue... or maybe you just are a bit more terracotta-inclined, this is for you...

This is such a cute Blogger design - "The Moon & Stars" (hey it's late and I'm not feeling all that creative anymore), but honestly I think it's my favourite blogger design! It took a lot of fiddling to get everything aligned properly but I am exceptionally pleased to say that it looks the same on IE, Firefox and Safari (on Mac & PC).

If by chance it looks crap on your screen resolution I would say - get with the times and make your resolution better (or bigger as the case may be?) Enjoy....

Ok, I guess it's a bit of a "classic" style, but it still looks really nice on both a Mac AND a PC (amazing that someone would make a design that works with both!). Anyway it's IE, Firefox and Safari ready. Enjoy!

Here are the instructions for installing "new", "widget-friendly" or "XML" blogger templates.

Here's what you've gotta do:

Log into your Blogger account and click on "Layout"

Photobucket

Select the "Template" tab and then from the Template page, please click on the "Edit HTML" submenu.

Photobucket

At the top of this page it says "Backup/Restore Template" and advises you to download your current template (good idea, incase things go weird).

The next step is to upload the suckmylolly.com template you like by "browsing" your computer for the .xml file that you downloaded and clicking on "upload".

Photobucket

DO NOT TOUCH THE BIG BOX OF "CODE" under this.
You MUST upload the .XML file from your computer - trying to upload anything else will not work!!

Done! View your blog to see the changes! Easy peasy!

Please note that I test every single blogger template before making them avaliable and I KNOW THEY WORK.

The biggest issue you'll probably have is not reading these instructions properly - please check this twice before contacting me.

Dear Diary is a simple, white blogger design. It's clean with non-obtrusive images and it's quite classic and simple (without putting everyone to sleep!). I hope you like it.
Tested on IE too - although I HATE IE with a passion - you should get Firefox, no joke.

Hi,
In all my blogger templates, I have put the code in for a favicon, although free hosting doesn't seem to like .ico files (icon files), so either:
1) you find your own place to host your favicon or
2)
ask me very nicely and I might host it for you.

Every time I want to generate a favicon, I go to this page: Dynamic Drive, favicon generator. All you do is load an image and it will create a favicon .ico file for you (which you save to your computer and then upload to hosting somewhere on the internet).

So in the top of the code I provide you with, you'll see the following (minus the actual http address bits of course):

[rel="shortcut icon" href="http://..FAVICON IMAGE URL.ico" ]
(it's about the 5th line from the top, not too hard to spot).

After you've generated yrself a nice favicon all you have to do is put the file path in the code I have supplied you with (http://whatever....). All sweet.

My friends blog (designed by me) has a favicon I like. Simple with bold colours that matches the rest of the website.

If you're interested, I'll make and host a favicon for you for $5. One time fee. Email me.

I am very proud of this design and I would totally use it myself (and have in fact used versions of it in the past). I've called it "I know what I'm doing" because of the magician man about to possibly cut a lady in half! That pic is from a dingbat font called "Klippy" (my all time fav dingbat font) which I sadly, cannot find anywhere on the internet anymore.
If anyone knows who created it, please let me know and I'll give them credit and make them supper because it's truely an awesome font.

Anyway, enough chit chat, here's the design:

If there's something I like as much as photos of birthday cakes, it's cats! I love cats and kittens a lot! I was searching on Flickr for some Creative Common images of cats and I found some great art from Patti. Patti gave me permission to use her delightful image in my new blog design and I came up with the following design: Purple Katz.
Thank you Patti for such an awesome image: visit Patti's blog and Patti's photos.

OK, so I am SO sick of boring Blogger designs! Is everyone afraid of colour these days? Anyway, that's the reason I made this design. Here's a screenshot:

Hi! I hope you like my blogger templates.

My name is Sharnee and I started suckmylolly.com as a creative outlet. If I didn't design blogger templates for the public then I would probably be changing my own design every other day!

And besides... it's much more fun to share! (I believe that wholeheartedly). As you may have noticed, all my designs are released under Creative Commons 3.0 - worldwide - so that means that you can use them for whatever purpose you want and I don't mind one bit! I even don't mind if they're used for commercial purposes (just make sure you show me - because the ego is a beautiful thing). I also appreciate keeping the link back to me because it gets more people aware of my templates - the less generic in this world the better!

I never honestly thought that so many people would like my templates (and that really does fill me up with warm fuzzies). I like aesthetically pleasing things and I don't think a blog should be neglected - even if it may be perused by people in Google Reader.

There are also a lot of blog design templates out there that are made by... well I don't know who. Robots? I can promise that I make each and every one of these templates individually and it's not just a matter of slapping one new pic on a template and giving it a new name. Each one of my designs is made up of about 5 images that all piece together.

Anyway, that's all boring stuff.

I like:
  • cats
  • candy (strangely enough I don't enjoy the taste of sugary-candy but I LOVE the way it looks) - I do love chocolate though!
  • birthday cakes from 1950s - 1980s
  • retro images of motels
  • boys
  • toast
  • Swimmer goods (Japanese)
  • icanhascheezburger.com
  • Christmas pudding
  • confusing myself with the notion of time travel
If you like my designs and want to donate via paypal (all monies will be used for website hosting and other costs) then please do so by clicking here:

Thank you! Rest assured that I have about a million blogger designs in my head - so far about 100 have managed to escape.

Thanks for supporting me!

Hi,
Thanks for taking an interest in my designs! Below you'll find a step by step guide to installing these designs (these are instructions for "classic" templates).
  • How on earth do I install these designs?
    Well now... it's not tricky.

If you are using NEW BLOGGER Here's what you've gotta do:

    STEP 1: =======
Log into your Blogger account and click on "Settings"

    STEP 2: =======
Select the "Template" tab and then from the Template page, please click on the "Edit HTML" submenu.

    (click for a larger view)

    STEP 3: =======
At the bottom of the "Edit HTML" page (under the text box which is full of code), you will see a link: "Revert to Classic Template"

    (click for a larger view)

A pop up window will open which says: "If you revert to your Classic Template, you will still be able to recover your current design. Click OK to revert".

    CLICK "OK"

    STEP 4: =======
A page will then load (after you've clicked OK) which is another text box full of code.
Please select all this text [either with your mouse or click CONTROL+A]

    DELETE ALL THIS TEXT

    (click for a larger view)
    STEP 5: =======
Open the .txt file which has the code for your new Blogger design.
Select ALL this text [either with your mouse or click CONTROL+A]
Copy this text [either using mouse, menu bar or CONTROL+C]

    STEP 6: =======
Paste this text into the now empty text box [either by using menu or CONTROL+V]

If you want to PREVIEW the design before you commit the changes, click PREVIEW.
It will probably open a new window so you can check it.

When you are ready to save it, go back to the previous window (where you just pasted the code) and click SAVE!

DO NOT PANIC if things get weird because it's very easy to chose a generic design and start again from scratch.

  • How can I add my own links to the side of the design?
Simple. From your Dashboard click on the "Template" area of your blog (the place where you first posted the code). You will then see a lot of html code. Scroll down the code until you see this (or something that looks very similar):

with something like this (if you wanted to link to Google for instance):

Ta-da! Done!
  • You can also add more links by copying the line of text again (and posting it directly under the previous line) and ends with and you can have as many links as you like. If you're not sure, you should copy all the code into a text document incase you bugger things up completely. Or... just use preview and preview before you save.
You can also put a link to your Flickr photos, MySpace, Facebook, Technorati... pretty much anything.
  • Where are the images for the blogs hosted?
They are hosted on a photobucket.com account (which may not last forever) so if you want to get your own photobucket account and replace the images, please do so. Email me if you need to know more. I'll include a tutorial soon.
  • Any useful links for me, please?
    Why yes!
Squidfingers - have an awesome amount of background image patterns
Kaliber - also have good backgrounds (ooh, pixel backgrounds)
stock.xchng - great photos, most are royalty free
Awesome blog hints - a great place for extra info.

  • What's this Dingbat thing your're always on about?
dingbat fonts - my faves are pretty much all at this site.

  • You can try building a great website design all types of graphics software and designs you install from the net. But you'll be better off having your ecommerce web hosting company build and design it professionally. The dotster company will help you build it but inmotion hosting will create the whole site for you! You'll be able to get cheap hosting from inmotion also. With a flat rate to anyone in the U.S. anytime, get a verizon wireless phone package.

********

PLEASE BE AWARE: that classic blogger designs are not compatible with "drag & drop" style widgets. If you want to add things to the side bar then you're going to have to edit the design yourself. You CAN add widgets but you will have to copy and paste the html/javascript code that is provided from wherever you got the widget from into the area of the code where you want the widget to be?
Don't know much about web design/html then I'd recommend that you use XML designs instead.

********

Here are the instructions for installing "old" or "classic" blogger templates.
Most of my older designs are this format - when you downloaded the template you'll find a .txt file of the code you need to use.

Here's what you've gotta do:

Log into your Blogger account and click on "Settings"

Select the "Template" tab and then from the Template page, please click on the "Edit HTML" submenu.

(click for a larger view)

At the bottom of the "Edit HTML" page (under the text box which is full of code), you will see a link: "Revert to Classic Template"

(click for a larger view)

A pop up window will open which says: "If you revert to your Classic Template, you will still be able to recover your current design. Click OK to revert".

CLICK "OK"

A page will then load (after you've clicked OK) which is another text box full of code. Please select all this text [either with your mouse or click CONTROL+A] DELETE ALL THIS TEXT

(click for a larger view)

Open the .txt file which has the code for your new Blogger design.
Select ALL this text [either with your mouse or click CONTROL+A] Copy this text [either using mouse, menu bar or CONTROL+C]

NOTE: If you want to save a copy of this text before you replace it, feel free to do so here.

Paste this text into the now empty text box [either by using menu or CONTROL+V] If you want to PREVIEW the design before you commit the changes, click PREVIEW. It will probably open a new window so you can check it.

When you are ready to save it, go back to the previous window (where you just pasted the code) and click SAVE! DO NOT PANIC if things get weird because it's very easy to chose a generic design and start again from scratch.

The biggest issue you'll probably have is not reading these instructions properly - please check this twice before contacting me. All the templates DO work, as I check them pretty thoroughly.

fyi: suckmylolly.com is "classic" blogger, not an XML design :)
